Intro.....
So you’ve decided it’s time to hire a photographer. You’re either planning a life milestone, launching a dream project, updating the family photo from 2013 where everyone blinked or you just want killer shots of your dog in a bowtie (zero judgements here. In full support of this!)
But now comes the part where you dive into the sea of photographers, each with their own style, tone, & approach to their portfolio.
Fear not, I’ve got you.
This special blog post is all about how to find your person behind the lens. The one who is not just snapping a photo but will see you & tell your story in the most realistic & authentic way.
#1 Establish What You Want
First things first: What kind of shoot are you after? Family chaos? Branding badassery? A food spread that looks so delicious you want your viewers to lick their screens?
The right photographer will have experience in your niche with a point of view that matches your vibe or vision.
I LOVE mood boards & an inbox influx of Pinterest inspiration brilliance that allow me to create personal shot lists specifically tailored to YOU!
I have a particularly special love for the anything weird, awkward giggles, dirty paws, windblown hair & creative storytelling.
My brand is ALL ABOUT IT!
#2 Stalk Their Work
(Not like Joe Goldberg off the YOU Netflix series either hehe.)
Do your research! Every photographer has a signature style. This is what separates them from everybody else. Their editing style is also different. While some go for moody tones some may favour warm sunset tones.
I prefer to keep images as natural as possible when it comes to editing with a gentle retouch where necessary (or requested). I love to use natural lighting where possible. I love moody lighting especially in food photography!
Do their images make you feel something? That’s a positive sign! You’re not just looking for pretty images –you’re looking for connection!
#3 Read About Them
A photographer’s online presence isn’t just about the pixels, It’s a representation of their personality. It’s not all about the regular posting either! It’s in the content of WHAT they are posting!
I especially recommend reading their about page & blog posts on their website as how they write about themselves will tell you everything you need to know not just about their business but who they are! (Believe me, about me sections on a website are harder to write than you think, especially when you’re extremely introverted!). I am not just here to attract clients, I am here for my vibe to attract my tribe!
#4 Have the Awkward Chat About Budget
We know the money talk for some isn’t sexy. But being upfront about your budget helps everyone involved!
Good photographers charge what they do because they’re offering more than just a quick click –they’re offering experience, time, emotional labor, creativity, & probably a few tissues if you’re crying during your wedding vows.
If their pricing is out of reach, please control yourself from insulting their value & worth!
Ask if they offer mini sessions, payment plans, or have upcoming collaborations that could possibly work for you. I offer a few mini sessions throughout the year along with competitions & special offers for educational, promotional or portfolio work at limited prices. Payment plans are also available.
A good photographer will meet you with honesty & not make you feel weird about asking. You’re not just purchasing, you’re investing!
#5 Trust Your Instinct (It’s rarely ever wrong!)
When you are emailing, messaging or talking to your photographer on the phone or in person, do they get you? Like, really get you? Do they listen, ask the right questions, & seem generally excited about your vision even if it includes glitter, goats, or a cake smash for an adult birthday shoot?
Then you’ve probably found the one. The right photographer feels less like someone you hired & more like someone who is in it with you!
Final Thoughts....
Choosing the right photographer will be worth every single click!
Whether it’s a branding session where you bare your soul, a family shoot with a toddler who refuses to wear pants, a rogue dog, or a food session where the crumbs are a part of the charm, be sure to choose the right photographer who will make you feel comfortable being your best self because this is where the real magic happens!
Think of me as your long lost creative soul mate ready to visually tell your story, document your real side & remind you of who the f… you are!
